CASTLE STREET IMPROVEMENTS
ABOUT THE SCHEME...
The scheme has been designed to improve safety, accessibility, air quality, and the overall public realm along Castle Street and surrounding junctions. The works will support more sustainable travel choices and help reduce traffic-related emissions in the city centre.
The main elements of the project include:
• Upgrading the existing pop-up cycleway to a permanent, fully segregated cycleway, compliant with Active Travel Guidance
• Resurfacing the carriageway throughout the scheme area
• upgraded footways and paved areas
• Changes to the bus stop area on Kingsway / North Road
• Measures to support improved air quality, including traffic management changes, enhanced bus infrastructure, green roof bus shelters, and additional landscaping
THE SCOPE OF OUR WORK...

1. Westgate Street Junction
• Start of the permanent, fully segregated cycleway connecting to the existing route
• Lane changes to allow a combined right-turn and straight-ahead movement
• Improvements to pedestrian crossings, paving, and the yellow box junction
• New cycle lane with dedicated traffic signals through the junction
2. Castle Street
• Changes to carriageway and footway layouts
• Continuation of the fully segregated cycleway
• New cycle parking
• Extension of the bus lane and a proposed green roof bus shelter
• Paving renewed
3. High Street Junction
• Paving improvements and decluttering of street furniture at the Cardiff Castle entrance
• Continuation of the segregated cycleway
• Existing bus lane retained
• Minor changes to loading bays, with the loading bay and taxi rank combined
4. Kingsway Junction
• Upgraded bus stops, including a green roof shelter and new bus island
• New pedestrian and cycle crossings
• Wildflower landscaping
• Removal of two trees, with replacement planting nearby.
